Q&A with Heather Grace Stewart

Heather Grace Stewart always knew she was destined for a career in writing. After volunteering for a cable news show in Kanata, Ontario, Heather decided she would pursue Canadian Studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, followed by a journalism degree at Concordia University in Montreal. Whenever Heather was not reporting the local news or hitting the textbooks, she would spend afternoons writing poetry while overlooking Lake Ontario or the St. Lawrence River. Although journalism was … [Read more...]

Building Character(s)

Creating compelling characters for your manuscript can be a daunting task. In order to retain your reader’s interest, you must craft interesting, full-bodied characters. New York Times best-selling author Kathleen Grissom (The Kitchen House, Glory Over Everything) emphatically believes that her characters make themselves known to her, and they “tell” her what to write about them. All writers are not that fortunate, so when creating the essential people in your work, think about the character as … [Read more...]

Readers of fiction wish to identify with the characters, so if that doesn’t occur within the first few chapters, it won’t matter how powerful and compelling your book may be. Studies conducted by Jellybooks conclude that the percentage of … [Read more...]

Amazon Kindle’s New Payment Plan

Recently, Amazon has change their royalty payment plan for their Kindle Direct authors by changing how to calculate author reimbursements. Amazon’s old royalty payments were based on book rentals by Amazon subscribers while the new system is on a pages-read basis. What does this mean? Authors will only get paid if an Amazon subscriber downloads the book and actually reads the content within the ebook. The reader has to spend a pre-calculated amount of time on the page to have it deemed as … [Read more...]

Writing an Outline: Is it important?

Outlines have been ingrained in the writing process ever since the first great story was written. As years passed, many authors consider a question as they develop as a writer; is writing an outline important? Some authors would argue that outlining a story goes against the organic nature of narrative writing, but others will argue that writing an outline allows for a fully fleshed out story with a coherent plot. There is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on your writing style. If you … [Read more...]
