It’s complete! Your blood, sweat and tears have gone into every word, your characters are like children to you, and your manuscript has been double- and triple-checked – hundreds of drafts reworked and rewritten several times. Now you are ready. So, what is the next step? The manuscript you’ve dream about, had nightmares about, and has (at times) been closer to your heart than family, is ready to be seen by the world. Many authors have the perception that e-publishing isn’t “real”; that somehow, if they e-publish, they are “settling.” Nothing could be further from the truth!
Traditional book publishing: Finding an Agent
Traditional book publishing is when a publisher offers the author a contract and, in turn, prints, publishes, and sells your book through booksellers and other retailers. The publisher essentially buys the right to publish your book and pays you royalties from the sales. You could start the lengthy process by finding an agent, who could charge fees above the standard rate of 15%, who may tear your work apart, and inform you that there are tens of thousands of vampire books in print, and the world doesn’t need one more. According to author Jane Friedman, in order to submit a new manuscript to an agent, the most common requirements include: a pitch letter, giving a brief description of your work, a novel synopsis, a novel proposal, and sample chapters. If your work is nonfiction, they require a Nonfiction book proposal, which is a complex document, usually twenty to thirty pages in length (minimum). That sounds like as much (or more) work than the actual book! Important note: Almost no agent accepts full manuscripts upon first contact. This is what “no unsolicited materials” means when you read submission guidelines.
Self-publish
To avoid the hassles involved with landing an agent, more writers are leaning toward self-publishing. You can expect to pay out-of-pocket approximately $500 to $4,000 to self-publish. This option may seem like the most feasible, however when you self-publish, your manuscript isn’t protected, and you have no support team. You must also acquire an ISBN number and/or copyright protection, and without assistance, it is quite difficult to format and convert your eBook.
Unreasonable thinking
Print 5,000 copies at Kinko’s, and have your out-of-work Cousin Norm drive around and throw it on people’s lawns like newspapers.
Do Nothing
This isn’t a viable option – you need to share your gift with the world!
